Review: Suzuki SX4 versus the rest

With the sudden glut of mid size cars available in the market and everyone touting their cars as “better than the rest”, we at AutoIndia thought that it was time we took the manufacturers claims head-on and tested which car is really the best. We took four cars, the Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Ford Fiesta and the new Maruti Suzuki SX4, and put them to the test.  We separated the men from the boys, pun intended. So how did they stack up and which one is for you? Read on.

HYUNDAI VERNA

Let’s be honest. At first glance, the Verna comes across as an ordinary looking, family car. But that it is, with élan.  Sold across the world with a myriad of names – among them the Accent in China and the US, the Dodge Attitude in Mexico, the Brisa in Venezuela, and the Brio in Puerto Rico – the Verna is truly a global car in this age of globalisation. And it’s dripping with technology. The model we tested, the 1.6 litre VTVT Xi, has an on road price of Rs731,000 and is value for money all the way to the bank. Equipped with high levels of trim, including electric locking, stereo, and all the other bells and whistles you associate with a car in this segment, the Verna’s petrol engine is a pleasure to drive, although it is so silent, at traffic lights you never know whether your engine is running or not.

But, rev the accelerator and you’ll love it as the 1600 cc engine with 103 BHP pummels you to beyond 100kmph in a mere 12 seconds.  The seats are comfortable and the rear seats have sufficient space to stretch out. Front seat passengers will be impressed by the cabin’s width. Comfort and space on the rear seats is also good. However, the suspension is not the best we’ve come across in this test. Small bumps in the road do find their way into the passenger cabin at regular intervals, and Hyundai needs to find a way to tweak the suspension optimally. The MacPherson strut front suspension sits on a rubber-mounted, insulated sub-frame and uses a lengthy lower arm for better control of wheel and suspension movements. The Verna comes with a torsion beam axle, which Hyundai says is more practical in terms of packaging, cost and durability.
