I Spy Strangers

Each year, more and more of my esteemed colleagues from the game fairs make the trek westwards to Nevada for the Shot Show or eastwards to Nuremberg for IWA. These trade events help fill in the bleaker part of the year. I hear that there is even a trade show in Moscow; although I have never seen the trader who told me about this ever again. Even now, as he wields his pickaxe, half a kilometre beneath the surface, in the half light of a salt mine, he probably regrets questioning that Belorussian custom officer’s parentage as his stock was searched for samizdat literature and chewing gum.

You can understand the allure of new markets and the prospect of selling to the trade therein. However, the benefits of attending non-trade events abroad appear less obvious. Those who consider game fairs in Ireland to be like our own in the UK but with a funny accent need to think again. Although some events like Moira or Shane’s Castle can generate good business, beware the VAT man at the ports. All VAT matters must be settled before you are allowed to leave Ireland on the return leg. Then, there are the costs of getting there which have to be factored in. A couple of nights sleeping rough in a tent can become extended to nights spent huddled on Stranraer quayside whilst the local youth entertain themselves with tractor races just inches from your vehicle late into the evening.

The shows in France like Chambord and Rambouillet also appeal until you see the costs involved. In my case, it would be difficult to get enough stock over there to cover the expense of the ground and tent rent. The prospect of spending a further few nights at one quaysides on Northern France courtesy of a wildcat ferry strike or a fisherman’s blockade also deters. And, of course, there’s the filthy local food!

But the traffic is not all one-way.

At game fairs across this great country of ours, the aisles fill with exotic languages and accents. In recent years, companies from South Africa, Croatia, Australia, South Africa, France, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain and Papua New Guinea (all right, I made up this last one). Did I mention that some companies come to our shows from as far away as South Africa? I only mention this as I always seem to end up having the stand next to theirs at the Midland or the CLA. the show usually coincides with some crucial rugby international between The Lions and The Springboks. I have never experienced a Lions win under these circumstances but even if I had, the memory of it would be wiped by the insomnia brought on from the three day party which kicks off when the bunch of flush-faced, exultant South Africans hear that final whistle.
