PostHeaderIcon (Norm Keller) : My flat rate manual shows .....

I no longer have the time to do all of the maintenance on my bikes so I decided to see what the cost of some preventive maintenance would be at the local dealerships for my 01 ST. With over 60k miles now on it, I figured it was time. I have never checked the valves or coolant since I bought it about 3 years and 30k miles ago. I have 3 Honda dealerships within a 15 mile radius of my home so I wrote up a list and provided it to all 3 for estimates. The list included valve adjustment, timing chain (since the rubber band is now 9 years old), coolant change with new thermostat, and steering head bearings (a notch has developed in the steering, probably due to the fact that 99% of my riding is in a straight line on the highway). I had hoped that the estimates would be close and I would pick the closest shop (within walking distance from home) to do the job. Unfortunately, their price, at about $1600 was about $400 higher than the next highest and $600 higher than the lowest. Some of the differences are due to their labor rates. The lowest charges $84/hr and the highest $96/hr. Is there an hourly labor estimate chart available online so I can estimate for myself what this should cost? Or would anyone have an idea what a job like this should cost in US dollars? I must be really lucky then, because I still have the original ball bearings on my '95 at 140,000 km.

I think how long they last has a lot to do with the very first few thousand miles, when you are supposed to re-torque the head bearings, which I did. Then, when I installed new fork springs at 95,000 km, I pulled it all apart and they still looked good, no notchiness at all, so I cleaned and lubed the balls and races with some Moly and slapped it all back together.

However, this is of no help to the OP.

If you strip off the body work and take the bike in naked, you should save yourself about two hours on the labour charge.

Travel to the snow area w/ a cracked radiator car?

I like to drive to Oregon from socal, but the radiator of my Honda accord has a 4-inch crack near the place where I put anti-freeze fluid. (no leaking), is it ok to drive it?
To Kenny, we go there for the relatives, not the snow. :)

As long as you can maintain the fluid level in the radiator within 1" of the top of the radiator without it leaking out you should be fine. Because you no longer have a sealed system under heavy load conditions (climbing mountain passes ) your car may heat enough to push out coolant, you will need to check the level more frequently than normal and have the coolant checked to make sure it has adequate freeze protection. Carry at least one gallon of coolant and 2 gallons of water just in case it decides to overheat and spew out the coolant!

The proper repair of course is to have the radiator replaced to restore the sealed system, and come next summer's heat you may have no choice because without the pressure in the system the coolant will boil at a much lower temperature, but in winter I think you will get away with it.
