Interesting, he thought, how cold the gasoline was, even after a day outside in the sun. But then gasoline always feels cold, even on days when the jerry can or the pump handle scald the hand that wraps around them.

Pungent, too, the thick smell of it, the cloying acrid, invasiveness of it. Pungent, unguent… a medicine that is mixed with a jelly, usually a petroleum one and rubbed upon wounds. Appropriate, this gasoline was his unguent, and his soul was a gaping wound. His medicine of choice in a two gallon can, it’s fumes rising in heat waves in the brilliance of the sun.

He could still smell the honeysuckle, the pitch of the pines. His elderly Mazda in the driveway crouched beneath it’s yellow pollen coat and scowled at him, it’s headlamp eyes watchful, it’s grill an open sneer. No doubt it resented this seeming waste of valued fuel food, no doubt it was thirsty there in the dog hot sun.

He shrugged and tipped the gas above his head again, a boy laughing in a watering can spray, the rainbows of the liquid refracting as they caressed his upturned face, his cheeks; pushing against his tightly pursed lips.

He could smell her body in the night, the scent of her hair, the menthol of her favorite body wash, some screwy doctor whose philosophy spider-scrolled around the bottle in meaningless repetitions that rendered even it’s cockeyed grammar redundant.

He remembered the touch of her hand on his arm and the golden cascades of her laughter as he held flickering matches to the mesquite chips beneath the red raw beef suspended in abject fear qbove them on the cold rack of the grill.

To be burned alive was a favorite of the old inquisitors, there was even a bronzed bull, hollowed out and with a little access hatch that locked only on the outside, on the outside, mind, when the slave, poor wretch, was on the inside, naked and scuttling in cockroach fear, in feline distaste, dancing faster and faster, trying to keep his feet off the ever warming metal of the bonfire bull, his bellows giving the bull it’s voice, his sobs and howls transmuted to angry cries and snortings from a monolithic stud in the fullness of harvest rut.
