Ferdinand Porsche, as a young engineer, at the age of 27, invented the first petrol-electric hybrid car in 1899. He came up with the novel idea of using a petrol engine running at a constant speed to drive a dynamo, which in turn charged alternators. The alternators fed electricity to two electric motors on the front wheel hubs of the car. His idea was to get rid of the complex power train, required to drive a gasoline only vehicle. One of the most famous technologies that were introduced in the Hybrid Motor car system was the advent of regenerative braking systems. In this type of braking, the car converts its kinetic energy into the electrical energy of the vehicle. This is of a big advantage as it saves the energy of the car rather than wasting it into heat energy. Hybrid cars are classified into three types according to the way in which power is supplied to the drive-train. They are series, parallel and series-parallel. In series hybrid cars, the electric motor drives the drive train while the ICE works as a generator to power the electrical motor and/or to recharge the batteries. As compared to the parallel types, they have a small combustion engine but a large battery pack. In the parallel type, the ICE and electrical motor are both connected to the mechanical transmission of the car. They rely more on the regenerative braking system. The third type is the series-parallel hybrids. These cars can perform in series at lower speeds and in parallel at higher speeds. In the full hybrid type, the vehicle can run just on the engine or on the batteries or a combination of both of them. Then, we have the mild hybrid. It is known as mild because the electric motor does not have the strength that is needed to drive the vehicle on its own.
