2 18" Ascendant Audio Mayhems Playin I'm On A Boat

The genset

The genset started with a discussion with a good friend who has the same attitude to boat maintenance that I do – why pay someone a fortune to do something you can do yourself. Now don’t misunderstand me, I don’t believe in having a load of junk on my boat just because I think I can do it better. But every now and again something comes along that can’t be simply wiped away.

The same friend had an opportunity to buy amongst other things, a Fischer Panda genset that was for such a good price I simply couldn’t let it go by. . . . . .

The genset was delivered to my home in pieces. The generator appeared complete but there were enough bits missing to believe that it would probably never work in its present form. So the first thing that had to be discovered was whether there was enough equity in the remains fo the machine for it to be worth the effort. By this time I had bought and paid for it so it was going to happen – one way or another.

Everything was covered in thick black diesel oil and I feared the worst. For this much oil to be covering the whole inside of the enclosure must mean that a catastrophic failure of some sort must have occurred. I feared I had wasted my money on a pup. I was to discover much later that the cause of the oil bath was the dipstick that had a worn rubber bung and it kept falling out and oil sprayed from the hole that it was supposed to seal.

After a lengthy clean up and stripping of the major compartments from the base, I washed everything with a powerful degreaser and started to feel a little happier about the condition. All the main bits seemed to be in good condition. A stock take and long reads of the maintenance record that came with the generator, I was able to start understanding what was missing, what never worked, what was endemically a problem with the keeping of the thing working.
